In movies when someone gets shot/stabbed/impaled through the heart they all die instantaneously.

But would that really happen in real life?

Wouldn't the brain still function until it ran out of oxygen? So wouldn't it be really painful until such time? Or maybe they pass out from the pain - cos that can happen too - and then they don't actually die until a few minutes later when the brain does run out of oxygen.

Chances are something along the lines of Lost would happen. The person would miss the heart and the target would die a horrible death drowning in their own blood. Lovely!

Lesson to be learnt: If you want to kill yourself, don't stab yourself in the chest.
