True love is not born in an hour.
- Ibn Hazm
*nod nod*
You'd need at least 2 hours! Ha! Kidding.
But what about the concept of soulmates? Would they recognise each other and fall in love the moment they lay eyes upon one another? Is there such thing as soulmates? Perhaps the term "soulmate" needs to be defined a little better.
Wikipedia! A reliable source of information!
Soulmate (or soul mate) is a term sometimes used to designate someone with whom one has a feeling of deep and natural affinity, friendship, love, intiacy, sexuality, and/or compatibility.
A related concept is that of the twin flame or twin soul – thought to be the ultimate soulmate, the one and only other half of one's soul, for which all souls are driven to find and join.
However, not everyone who uses these terms intends them to carry such mystical connotations; they are sometimes used simply as an expression of strong emotional feeling for someone.
There was a time in my innocent youth where I believed that the concept of the twin flame could be true (thank you Hollywood). But that innocent little girl is gone; death by firing squad behind the chemical shed (thank you real life). There are over 6 billion people in the world. Out of all those people, what are the chances of meeting your "other half"? Ok, you could probably rule out a certain percentage of individuals based on gender, and a certain percentage of people who hate you for being Western and want to wage Islamic Jihad against you and all your people.
I'm going with the non-mystical definition; the one that requires more than 1 hour to know a person let alone fall in love.

rofl i've actually never fully subscribed to the idea of a soulmate (surprise, surprise). and i rkn if you do so subscribe, upon closer analysis, you can get into all sorts of wierd.
like... assuming a deeper karmic connection is your basic definition of soulmate. who's to say that it cannot be someone of the same sex? someone who is years and years younger? even.. and i know this is where i've gotten into trouble.. something of a different species?
we condemn these people for being sexual deviants in society when, really, they are observing the strictures of the hollywood ideal.
but yes, after that little rant, nod, i do see the problems with the idea of a one true soulmate. you do need a connection to stay with a person for the rest of your life, but i don't believe it is always a once off affair.
Well, I'm a hopeless romantic, so I disagree with you both.
I'm not sure about the twin flame thing, but hopefully I'll live to be disproved on that. As for soulmates, or love at first sight: why not?
Sure, you can come up with some boring definition of these feelings as the irrational outputs of a flawed biochemical system, but experiencing those feelings? Definitely not boring.
Love is borne from fear.
Just as Machiavelli says one can rule by love or by fear, I believe the right amount of fear can make you fall in love with a potato, let alone a functioning human being.
Romance is a conjoined illusion, a contract between you and another person that says, "This is our fantasy." Like when you point with your finger and say, Bang! and I clutch at my chest and fall to the ground.
I believe relationships are driven by phobia and self-deception; the measure of how afraid you would be without this person paired with ability for the two of you to create a shared delusion of un-fear. Let's just tell ourselves that everything is alright.
My advice is that you find someone you despise, jump out of a plane together and hold hands for the entire time until you hit the ground and the cruel reality of gravity wrenches the two of you apart. It's a freeing moment when death is your only fear and no lie in the world can dull the panic.
