The Victorian government has been urged to rethink the safety of level crossings after a car was run over by a train at a St Albans level crossing, killing 3 people.
Shut up!!!!
The reasons why those 3 people died were:
a) the driver was stupid enough to straddle the tracks when traffic stopped.
b) all occupants of the car were stupid enough to not get out of the car when a train approached.
and/or c) they didn't see the train approaching them at all when the boom gates went down around them, while they were sitting on the tracks.
It's not because the level crossing wasn't safe, it's because there are stupid people in the world who don't know how to move themselves out of danger to save their own bloody lives.
Their death is called natural selection. Thousands of people drive over level crossings everyday, and none of them get killed...except the stupid ones. You don't have to waste money and resources because the human genome lost 3 stupid people.
How hard is it to open a car door, get out of the car, and run?!!?

except... in Sydney, there's not a single level crossing (in use, anyway). And there's 0% risk that someone's gonna get a hurt real bad.
The other major benefit - and I struggle to believe you don't see it! - is that traffic will flow. Sure, you don't have to do it for every level crossing tomorrow, but Melbourne does have a ludicrous number of them.
Two birds, meet one stone.
also, getting out of the car and running still leaves the car to get hit, causing damage to car and train that must be repaired, plus all the potential injuries (and suing the government) that could be had inside the train when it stops abruptly (or at least hits the car)... all round, not the ideal situation.
...cos the train isn't going to stop abruptly when there's people inside the car??

yeah, i'm not saying that it wouldn't, but that's no argument for not putting level crossings in right? I was saying that as a way to say what if you take out the people-getting-killed factor.
